un-Wii-lievable

November 29th, 2006, in the wee hours

Yes, that is The Don playing video games. I’m pretty sure it was the first time I had witnessed such an event.

I really believe Nintendo has a huge hit on their hands with the Wii. It’s just a lot of fun to play, especially because of the social aspect.

And if you’ve seen any other photos of my family gatherings you’ll know that at least one person is on the internet at all times. Good to see Maneesh keeping the streak alive.

well… darn.

Yes, these kind of things happen to me.

Needless to say, I didn’t get my peanuts.

Wii Having Fun

November 24th, 2006, terribly early in the morning

Maneesh “bowling”

Aparna, Liah and I are in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. We’re having a great time, especially because Maneesh, Manish, Irma and RANI are here! Liah and Rani are a blast to watch play with each other.

However, the real reason I’m writing it to let you know the new Nintendo Wii is a lot of fun! What makes it fun? Well, the games are easy to learn and play, but more importantly, the way you play the games is a lot of fun. As you can see from the above photo, Maneesh is showing off his wild and crazy bowling technique while playing Wii Sports Bowling. You literally act out what your are trying to accomplish. Another fun aspect is for those not playing to laugh at how ridiculous people look while playing. And yes…I will admit that Mr. Maneesh “What are sports?” Goyal beat me repeatedly at Wii Bowling.

I highly recommend the Wii. (If only I was getting paid to give my recommendations…hrmm… anyone have a contact in Nintendo’s marketing department?)

Cowboys!

November 19th, 2006, late in the evening

What a game today! The Cowboys beat the previously undefeated Colts. I officially have a crush on Tony Romo. How did I celebrate the win? By continuing my efforts to raise a Cowboys fan of course.

Touchdown!

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

November 19th, 2006, late in the evening

What did I do today? Why I waited in a line outside for 2 hours at 8am in order to buy a video game system. For myself.

Mo playing Wii Tennis. He needs the exercise.

I bought a Nintendo Wii. The Wii is a different type of video game in that you play the games by motioning what you want to to. Tennis? Swing the controller like a racket. Bowling? Hold the controller like a bowling ball and try to avoid the gutters. It’s actually very cool. Nintendo was trying for two things. 1. Games that are easy to pick up. 2. Games that are fun to play. I can say with confidence they accomplished both.

Raj for Kansas (aka Democracy)

November 17th, 2006, in the wee hours

My quick trip to Wichita last week to help my cousin Raj in his campaign to represent Kansas’ 87th district was an amazing experience. It was my first time to really be a part of our democracy at the ground level. I was barely there 24 hours and it opened my eyes to just how much work is involved in running for office. The picture above is of campaign staff and volunteers calling people on election day to get them to head to the polls. hundreds and hundreds of calls.

Those who know me know I love politics. My cousin Raj is a large reason for that. He’s been active in causes for almost his entire life, and he is the one who took me to the 1996 Democratic National Convention. That was an experience I’ll never forget, and not just because I got to meet President Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. Of course, I do things for Raj. For example, I recently gave him advice on what kind of HDTV to buy. So we’re even.

Raj is going to be in the spotlight for a long time to come.

See more photos of democracy in action in my gallery.

VICTORY!

November 7th, 2006, in the wee hours

State Representative 87th District

Raj Goyle …… 3216 / 56%
Bonnie Huy …… 2490 / 43%
WRITE-IN …… 5 / 0%

Congratulations Raj. You earned it.

FYI, I’ve been with the campaign for the last 24 hours and it has been an amazing experience. From being a part of democracy at the ground level, to waiting anxiously for results to come in, to finding out my cousin won. More soon…

Brave Girl

November 6th, 2006, in the wee hours

Well, I’m ready to start catching up on all the things I didn’t bother to blog about when they happened. One of the biggest things to happen to us in the past couple of months was Liah having ear tube surgery. You can read about it by clicking on the link, but if you are familiar with it you know it’s a common surgery for kids. Nevertheless, Aparna & I were a bit nervous. Liah on the other hand had no stress! As you can see below, she was ready for action. She did great, and she recently had her followup appointment and everything is a-ok.

Nincompoop

November 5th, 2006, in the wee hours

I used the word ‘nincompoop’ today when talking about someone, and Aparna couldn’t stop laughing. Am I the only one who considers nincompoop part of their regular vocabulary? Okay, it hasn’t been part of my normal vocabulary for long, but I’m making a conscious effort to find more “kid friendly” replacements for my normal repertoire of adjectives.

Not quite sure what’s going on? Look at the check again.

Am I too proud to cash this check? No.

Electronic Voting

November 3rd, 2006, in the wee hours

I voted this week, and it was the first time I particpated in “evoting.” Previously I had only used the infamous punch card ballots. I thought the evoting device is OK. The text was sometimes hard to read, and the user interface was a little flakey. It wasn’t a touchscreen, but rather a scrollwheel and enter key. However, the really frustrating part is there was no paper receipt. God only knows if the people I selected are the people the machine recorded. I don’t know if I was allowed to take photos, so I didn’t ask. Here’s what I placed my votes on:

evoting

Remember to vote this Tuesday! And be sure to vote for Democrats if you want an improvement in our sorry state of affairs.

p.s. - All you Wichita readers - be sure to vote for Raj Goyle!
