Happy Husband’s Day!

October 31st, 2004, early in the afternoon

What? You aren’t familiar with Husband’s Day? By all means, please click here to learn about this important day. I was not familiar with it until I got married and Aparna insisted on celebrating it. She observes all the traditions. Well, except for the fasting. Oh yeah, and the whole “praying for your husband” aspect. However, she does make sure we observe the part where the husband brings a gift for his wife. Happy Husband’s Day!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind DVDAparna & I watched a fascinating movie tonight, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s a Charlie Kaufman movie, so you can be sure it had a compelling and intricate story. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes good movies. If I had to label it (and labeling is so much fun!), I’d call it a romance.

Aparna & I watched the movie at home on DVD. If you’ve read my blog before, you are familiar with our weekend nights:

  • Drop Nalima off at wherever she’s going out
  • Come home and chill out

We did get a chance to see Nalima in her Halloween outfit tonight. I just have one thing to say:  Aparna & I will be showing off our Halloween outfits tomorrow, as will Nalima again. San Francisco is famous for its Halloween festivities, and Aparna & I are planning on paying a visit to the Castro tomorrow night with some friends:

Castro @ Halloween

Rest assured, I’ll be back soon with words and photos from Halloween!

Another one bites the dust

October 29th, 2004, in the wee hours

It’s hard to believe, but tonight was Jay’s last night as a citizen of San Francisco. He’s off in the morning to start his new life in LA. Jay moved here from Dallas in 1998, so he managed to survive in crazy San Francisco for 6 years. Of course, he’s been talking about making the move to LA for at least the last 2 years! From helping me find a house for Neil Desai to buy before I moved here, to helping me change a lightbulb last night, Jay has been there for me since the first day before I moved to San Francisco. Really, you just can’t find help that good anymore. It just won’t be the same watching TV anymore without Jay there frantically telling me to “go back” when I try to skip over the commericals on a show I tivo’d, or laughing amazingly loud at TV shows, commercials, movies…anything really. He will be missed. I think Aparna put it best when she said, “It feels like a child is moving out.”

Anyway, we had a fantastic going away get together for Jay last (Wednesday) night at Jade. All of the friends Jay has made over the past 6 years showed up, and the 4 of us had a great time. We did not drink that much (”We” being Aparna & I. Jay got sozzled), and we weren’t even out late, but we sure felt like we partied hard when we woke up this morning. What better reminder that your not in your 20’s anymore than to go out for few drinks on a Wednesday, and be hung over all day Thursday. To put it lightly, today was not the most productive day Jay, Aparna, or I have ever had.

Dinner with Aggies

October 25th, 2004, in the wee hours

John & HeatherAparna & I had dinner with some good friends (are any friends “bad friends?”) on Saturday night. Yes, that’s them on the left, and no, that’s not a picture of them on Saturday night. We dined at a very good restaurant, Scala’s Bistro, and had a great time catching up. We last visited with them at Shiraz & Maanasa’s wedding (aka 2004 Wedding #12), so we hadn’t seen them in a while. John is one of my few Aggie friends. I have nothing against Texas A&M graduates. It’s just hard to be friends with people who can’t form complete sentences. Thankfully, John is smarter than your average A&M grad.
Being old & boring, Aparna & I headed home after dinner. It was almost 10pm! Actually, I was (am) still feeling a little bit under the weather, and despite Aparna’s best efforts, she’s managed to come down with a little bit of a cold herself. Hopefully we’ll both be better soon!

Full House

October 23rd, 2004, terribly early in the morning

One of the best aspects of owning a home is not needing permission to have a slumber party. Spent the night hanging out with Aparna, Jay and Nalima, and now we are all getting ready to hit the sack. We watched a tivo’d episode of ‘lost‘ (which is still a great show), ate some pizza, heard about Jay’s trip to Austin, and just goofed around. Good times.

Couple of updates:

  1. I’m feeling much better. Still not 100%, but should be soon enough
  2. NetFlix has much faster processing than DVD Barn, but I still haven’t decided if that is enough to warrant the extra ~$5/month NetFlix costs.

Hope y’all are having a good weekend!

Not over the weather

October 20th, 2004, in the wee hours

uggghhhh… being under the weather is no fun. I’ve had a slight cold (or fever, I never know) since Sunday. One thing I have realized is that 12-hour medicine does not last 12 hours. Oh well, at least work provides free kleenex. (Hey, ya gotta look on the bright side!) Of course, I’m pretty sure my cube mates are tired of me blowing my nose right next to them…
Finally, Aparna wants you all to know there is absolutely no chance she will catch this cold from me.

Turn off that TV

October 19th, 2004, in the wee hours

TV-B-GoneSo a guy goes and invents a tiny little device that can turn off any TV on the planet. Is anyone surprised that once word spread on the net that he was innudated with orders? The possibilities!

Missy in SF

October 18th, 2004, in the wee hours

Missy & JenMy good friend Missy (see blonde on left) was in SF this past weekend for some medical conference. From what I could tell her role mainly involved taking doctors out to dinner and letting them get drunk on her company’s tab. She, Aparna & I got together for brunch Sunday morning at the (newly renovated) Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. We had a great time. She talked about getting yelled at by the hotel workers currently on strike in SF while we all watched a stranger yell very loudly at a trashcan. Gotta love San Francisco!

While I enjoy trying to keep in regular touch with my friends, there is something very comforting about catching up with a good friend that you haven’t seen in a while …or maybe that feeling was just the frittata I had settling in.

Shall We Dance?

October 17th, 2004, in the wee hours

Shall We DanceAparna, Nalima & I saw Shall We Dance? on Saturday night. Yes, young Nalima went to a movie with the old married couple. That became clear to me when I remarked before the movie that it didn’t seem that crowded at the theater and Nalima quickly reminded me, “Most people go out on Saturday night Mo.” And I thought going to the movies was going out.

The ladies thought the movie was ok, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5 (with Friday Night Lights being a 4.5 out of 5). I’d classify it as a romantic drama with some comedy.

Speaking of movies, I’m giving NetFlix and DVD Barn a try. You’ve probably heard of NetFlix, but they are both mail-order DVD rental companies. NetFlix has an offer of $15.99/month to have 3 movies at a time, and DVD Barn offers 3 movies at a time for $12.95 a month. I’ll report back on which one I end up keeping.

For you Hindi movie fans, NetFlix carries Indian movies. You can view their selection here. I’d appreciate someone letting me know if they have a good selection of Bollywood films. (I’m not knowledgeable enough about Hindi movies to know if their selection is good or not.)

p.s. - I’ve only seen one 5 out 5 movie this year, Garden State.

Political Fun

October 14th, 2004, in the wee hours

In honor of the debates finally being over I thought I’d throw out a little political fun. The fun consists of 2 movies and 1 talking head.

This first one will appeal to everyone. It has been viewed a zillion times by now, and if you’ve already seen it do yourself a favor and watch it again!

Click here to watch “This Land.”

This 2nd one is more recent and I think anyone will find it humorous, but the Indians among us will find it especially funny.

Finally, I had the opportunity to hear my cousin Raj on New York’s WNYC today. WNYC is New York’s flagship public radio station. Raj was one of the featured guests on Brian Lehrer’s show. The topic was voting rights, and Raj was awesome! It was very cool listening to my cousin fight the good fight. I figure it’s just a matter of time before he takes over Crossfire.
